VicRoads Hazard Perception Test

The VicRoads Hazard Perception Test is a computer-based test that focuses on scenarios where probationary drivers are more likely to be involved in a crash. The test assesses your ability to recognise and respond to potential hazards in the safest way possible.

The Hazard Perception Test needs to be completed before you can take the drive test.

To take the Hazard Perception Test you must hold a current Victorian car learner permit and be at least 17 years and 11 months of age. You can now choose to take the test online or in-person.

There are 25 driving scenarios presented in the test. You’ll be given a total of 45 minutes to complete the test. You must respond to all 25 driving scenarios within the 45 minutes, or your attempt will be automatically considered unsuccessful. When you take the Hazard Perception Test Online your first attempt is free.

On the day of your assessment you must bring:

  • Your current Learners Permit (license)

  • Your Log Book where applicable

Note: The instructors at Jude’s prefer you to take your hazard perception test on a separate day to that of your drive assessment. This method helps to eliminate nerves and gives you time to focus on each separate assessment. Also, note that you must pass your hazard perception test before you can take your drive assessment with VicRoads. We understand that with work or other commitments, this is not always possible. Your instructor will help you make the right decision.

If you have any questions please feel free to call your driving instructor.
